Dominion House

Dominion House is a 10 bed male residence situated in the Wolseley neighbourhood of Winnipeg.

Dominion House provides support to men on Parole, Statutory Release or Probation whose primary issues are related to employment, housing and substance abuse support. A case management approach is utilized to deliver service. A case plan, typically focusing on addiction recovery, anger management, negative/criminal thinking and relapse prevention, is tailored to the individual’s needs. This plan dovetails with the treatment plan of the referring agency.

Residents and Mental Health

Dominion House also provides service to individuals with mental disabilities such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, brain damage due to drugs, solvents or trauma and developmental problems.* Again, in conjunction with the referring agency, staff develop an individual treatment plan focusing on life skills, addiction issues, antisocial attitudes/associates and relapse prevention. Preparation for independent or semi-independent living is normally a goal for these cases. (*Dorchester House accommodates men with severe mental health disorders.)

Staff Support

Residential house staff help residents to problem solve day to day issues, teach basic life skills through discussion and direct example, and support residents in their efforts to maintain a positive lifestyle. Residents participate in meal preparation and house work chores, in conjunction with staff. In terms of formal supervision, residential house staff monitor the activities of residents to ensure compliance with conditions of Parole and Probation. Significant events and serious breaches of conditions are immediately reported to the appropriate authorities.

The Case Manager maintains the case plan in conjunction with the referring agency and works one on one with residents. They also maintain ongoing liaison with a variety of community resources and will assist residents to gain access to community programs and/or social services. Each resident’s case is reviewed regularly by the Case Manager and the House Manager in consultation with others supporting the resident in their plans for a positive future.
